The US market will, once again, be deprived of more than half of the engine range the X4 will be available with, from the get go. That’s what happens when you’re completely and utterly reticent towards diesel engines.
No less than six engines will be available from the get-go for the new X4 worldwide, 3 diesels and 3 petrol alternatives. The entry level model, and the cheapest, will be the xDrive20i.

As expected, it features the same N20 turbocharged 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine on every other 20i model out there now, making 184 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque from 1,250 RPM. With it, the 1,735 kg (3,825 lbs) car will do 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in just 8.1 seconds, with the automatic 8-speed Steptronic transmission, which is also the only gearbox available for all models right now. Fuel consumption, on average, is rated between 6.9 l/100 km (34 mpg) and 7.3 l/100 km (32.2 mpg) depending on the tires you choose.

The mid-range model uses the same 2-liter engine, taken up to 245 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. We’re talking, of course, about the xDrive28i model. Fitted with the same standard 8-speed transmission, it will do 62 mph in 6.4 seconds and return an average fuel consumption between 7 l/100 km (33.6 mpg) and 7.4 l/100 km (31.7 mpg), once again, depending on the tires and wheels you choose to go with.

The top of the line xDrive35i model comes with the usual 3-liter 6-cylinder inline N55 turbocharged engine, making the same 306 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque that we’ve been getting used to by now. From a standstill, it will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.5 seconds, returning an average fuel consumption of 8.3 l/100 km (28.3 mpg), no matter the tires and rims.

No matter the engine, all cars have the same 204 mm ground clearance, 2,810mm (110,6 inch) wheelbase, 184.3 inches (4,680 mm) length and 63.9 inches (1,624 mm) height while the boot load capacity measures up between 17.7 to 49.4 cu. ft. (500–1,400 liters) with the seats up or down. By the way, the rear seats are 40:20:40 foldable as standard.

Moving on to the diesel alternative, the entry level model is the brand new xDrive20d introduced on the LCI X3, making 190 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque and is the only one available with both a manual and an automatic gearbox. When fitted with the former, the car will do 43.5 mpg on average (5.4 l/100 km) while the 0-62 sprint will be the same as with the automatic: 8 seconds flat.

The other 2 diesels are both fitted with 3-liter engines and automatic 8-speed transmissions. The xDrive30d comes with the usual 258 HP and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque combo while the xDrive35d has two turbochargers and squeezes out 313 HP and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) of torque out of the 6-cylinders under the bonnet.

The former does 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 5.8 seconds while the most powerful model yet will do the same in just 5.2 seconds, about as much as an S3 with a manual. On the fuel consumption front, the two will take up around 6 liters of diesel per 100 km (39.2 mpg).

All engines are EU6 compliant but only the xDrive28i and xDrive35i will make it to the US initially. Hopefully, we’ll get to see some diesel alternatives too later on, especially the xDrive35d model which is the fastest and most powerful in the line-up yet.
