2015 BMW M3 Launched in China. Costs $162,000

Last week BMW officially launched the new M models in China, including the M3 Sedan, M4 Coupe and the M4 Convertible. While the first two were expected, the latter was a surprise. Not as big a surprise as the pricing was though.

Everybody knows by now that China has a different set of prices when it comes to European premium cars and BMW didn’t ‘disappoint’. Especially since China became the biggest market for the German company, the decision was made to price the new M3 at CNY998,000. That translates roughly into $162,000 at today’s exchange rates.

Looking over the $62,000 price tag the same car has in the US, it’s hard to justify the $100,000 difference. Of course, to keep things simple, all the cars that are to be sold in China will be fitted with almost all optional features you can have, as standard. That still doesn’t make up for the substantial price you’d have to pay.

The M4 Coupe is even more expensive, setting the bar at CNY 1.02 million or $166,000 at today’s exchange rates while the Convertible goes even further up, at CNY 1.13 million or $184,000. These two models too are fitted with all the optionals in the book.

The introduction of the M4 Convertible is a rather surprising move. That’s because the E93 M3, for example, wasn’t available in China due to the projected low demand that’s justifiable if you think about it. In the most populous cities of the Asian country, air pollution, noise and traffic jams make it hard to enjoy the advantages of a droptop.

Of course, all cars will be coming with the S55 3-liter biturbo engine making 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque mated to either a manual 6-speed automatic or 7-speed DCT gearbox.
