2015 BMW 1 Series Facelift Revealed with New Design and More Standard Kit

Ever since the new 1 Series hatchback was unveiled for the first time, the BMW community (and others as well) found the front fascia of the range a bit... odd. Some even went as far as to call it ‘googly eyed’ and I agree. It wasn’t the best look ever.

It seems like BMW decided to do something about that and actually listened to its customers when they set out to create the Life Cycle Impulse for this model or facelift as other manufacturers call it. Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, this is the new 1 Series hatchback!

As you can already tell, the front fascia received a big makeover, one worthy of the Extreme Makeover show. The kidney grilles are larger by comparison but not by a big margin while the headlights have a completely new design, encompassing the traditional corona rings as well.

The biggest news about the headlamps is that they can now be fitted with LED lights as an optional feature, something that wasn’t available before and that still isn’t on the 2 Series and 3 Series models. We’re guessing that the 3 Series will be getting theirs when its own facelift comes out.

Round the back, the taillights were also changed by a considerable margin. The new look now sports the BMW “L” shape we’ve been getting used to lately, using LED technology. I don’t know about you but I’m sold already!

More standard equipment awaits inside the car

The cabin wasn’t drastically changed and that’s understandable. After all, it does get by perfectly well considering that this is the cheapest BMW you can get at the moment. However, the company decided to introduce even more standard equipment in the new models.

BMW’s Radio Professional system and iDrive is now standard on all cars, including a 6.5” freestanding display integrated in the dash. If you decided to get the Navigation system Professional, the size of the screen gets up to 8.8” and the controller grows in size as well, offering touch-sensitive support.

Other standard features now available for no cost include automatic air conditioning, a rain sensor for the automatic windscreen wipers and tyre pressure indicator that will come in handy for those runflat tyres that come as standard.

Parallel parking and transverse parking can be done automatically

BMW decided to release its new transverse parking auto pilot on with the 1 Series. It’s a peculiar decision, considering that the 1 Series is just the entry-level model in the range but we’re not going to argue.

This is the first such system introduced by the Bavarians and allows your car not only to parallel park (as it was the case up until now) but also to park in between any other two give obstacles, like in a multi-storey parking lot.

ConnectedDrive now also allows you to get a radar-based Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function that was previously not available on the 1 Series. Features such as the camera-based Driving Assistant, rear-view camera and Speed Limit Info system with No Passing Info display can also be specified, as optionals, of course. All cars will now also be fitted with an integrated SIM card that allows you to get over-the-air updates for the navigation system for free during the first 3 years. There's also an entire new range of engines for the revised 1 Series. We wrote a guide to tell you all about it.
