2015 Audi S4 Sedan and Avant Launched in Germany with 354 HP Turbo Engines

The delicate balance between comfort and performance has changed a lot in the past year. The BMW 335i is no longer idolized by millions of teenagers while Audi just stopped making those supercharged toys. Yes, the turbocharged 2016 S4 and S4 Avant have arrived in Europe, and they can be yours for €59,300 and €61,150 respectively.

America is not going to get these models until the 2017 model year. But we can find out a little bit from these specs and pricing released by the Germans. Both the sedan and the wagon are fitted with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine. It's not even twin-turbocharged since that honor will be reserved for the RS4.

But being rated at 354 PS and 500Nm (369lb-ft) of torque allows the sedan to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds. The wagon version takes 4.9 seconds, placing it within the reach of the S3 drivers.

Another thing that's changed is the gearbox, as the S4 and the A4 3.0 TDI now use the sturdy 8-speed ZF automatic. It's capable of launches and rapid gear changes but won't have the bolt-action feeling of a twin-clutch. The standard 18-inch alloys can be increased to 19-inch ones, while the 350mm vented and perforated front brakes should have no problems handling the lighter chassis.

If the lack of a second turbo puts you off, know that for €60,065 you can buy the Mercedes-Benz C 450 AMG 4Matic sedan with standard AWD and a 7G-Tronic twin-clutch. Could Audi be losing its touch?

One area where getting rid of the supercharger has helped the V6 engine is fuel consumption. The 4-door 7.4 l/100km (31.8mpg US) and the estate 7.5 l/100km (31.4mpg US). The CO2 emissions stand at 170g/km and 175g/km, respectively, all excellent numbers for a performance car.

Cosmetically, the S4 is distinguished by its standard LED headlights, S-specific body kit, and quad exhaust system. All the metal pieces have a satin finish, and the grille has been revised. Inside, they come with leather-wrapped 3-spoke sports steering wheel and Alcantara upholstery for the sport seats.

The suspension is based on the multi-link system of the A4 but with lowered springs. The Torsen differential is standard and shuffles the quattro permanent AWD. However, a quattro GmbH rear differential can be fitted as an option. You may also have to pay extra for the digital dash and even red brake calipers.
