2015 Audi A6 2.0 TDI ultra Acceleration and Top Speed Test

The mid-life facelift for the current generation of the Audi A6 brought about a great deal of changes, including new engines and gearboxes, cosmetic tweaks and lower fuel consumption.

This is also the first time Audi stuck the “ultra” badge on the A6. It stands for fuel economy in the same way as VW’s BlueMotion and in the case of this particular A6 means that it uses a 2-liter diesel engine.

A large sedan with a four-cylinder TDI just shouldn’t work, but it does. In fact, BMW are planning to offer a 3-cylinder version of the G30 5 Series, but that’s another story.

How does the A6 ultra perform? Not badly, as this video by Automan will show you. Under the bonnet is a mill that produces 190 PS and 400 Nm of torque. As far as we know, it’s only available in Europe with a choice of 6-speed manual gearbox or 7-speed S tronic with a very long gear ratio.

It’s a brand new gearbox that Audi offers on A6 and A7 models with front-wheel drive and replaces the old CVT units.

After reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.9 seconds, the A6 ultra feel a little sluggish. There is also a petrol-powered version with a 1.8 TSI or a 150 PS base diesel, but we think this diesel is a better fit for the car. Even at speeds of around 160 km/h (100 mph), the fuel consumption stays relatively low. With 400 Nm, it’s also punchy enough to use in town, where the size of the A6 is a disadvantage.

Available from 44,050 euros with this 190 horsepower 2-liter TDI and the S tronic gearbox, the A6 ultra seems like it’s going to b a popular company car.
