Owners of new Ducati Multistrada machines could do well to get in touch with their nearest dealer if they want to make sure nothing bad happens to their rides. That is because Ducati North America has revealed data on a recall that will extend worldwide, so you might be hearing from Borgo Panigale quite soon.
The recall is aimed at checking the batch numbers on the kickstand assemblies of Multistrada 1200 and Multistrada 1200S bikes. Some of the kickstands for these bikes have been manufactured with a support tube that has a wrong length and is out of tolerance.

Because of this, Ducati believes that the strength of the weld may have been reduced in the area that joins the kickstand support tube and the forged upper part of the assembly. In these motorcycles, said weld could break and the kickstands would no longer be able to support the bike's weight, causing it to fall over.

Since the breakage might occur without any warning, the entire predicament puts riders, passengers and bystanders at risk of being injured by the falling bike. Of course, the damage to the bike is another concern that can't be overlooked.

2015 and 2016 model year Multistrada are affected

No reports on injuries or accidents have been filed with Ducati so far, Ducati North America says. Still, the French division of the manufacturer received a report on a broken side-stand on May 12, 2015. An investigation was carried out together with the supplier and the factory’s quality department and the cause was identified.

The only models potentially affected by the defect were manufactured between December 1, 2014 and June 11, 2015. Their kickstand assemblies have the batch number marked on them. The problematic parts have numbers through W22-2015 (Week 22 Year 2015). Batches with numbers starting with W23-2015 are compliant, Ducati says.

A number of 869 Multistrada bikes are recalled in the US alone, and Ducati says that customers who bought 2015 or 2016 MY bikes could also inspect their kickstand assembly for evidence of cracking at the weld.
