2014 WSBK Russian Round Cancelled over Political Issues

In case you thought that the tensions in the Crimean peninsula are only a thing for Russians and Ukrainians, you were wrong. The Russian round of the 2014 SBK has just been canceled, the official website of the series informs.

The decision was made by DWO and YMS Promotion and the two agreed to cancel the round scheduled for the 21st of September at the Moscow Speedway. “The current political situation affects the capabilities of a number of key partner companies essential to run the event. Parties regret the decision, but are confident that the strong partnership between DWO and YMS Promotion will prevail,” the two declared in a very short and laconic press release.

At the same time, the organizer of the Russian WSBK round expressed hopes that 2015 will bring a calmer political climate in the area, and the remainder of the contract with the Moscow Speedway will be honored. With US and other European companies having to deal with the World Superbike series, it looks like this is move we could have seen coming, given the political situation in the area.

Until Russia sees better days and catches another glimpse on WSBK, Tom Sykes and Kawasaki have won both races this Sunday at the Motorland Aragon circuit. Loris Baz brought Kawasaki two more second positions, while the third places went to Jonathan Rea for Honda and Marco Melandri Riding for Aprilia.

The current standing in the 2014 WSBK sees Sykes in the lead with 75 points, followed very closely by Loris Baz, with 71 and Sylvain Guintoli with 64. The top 5 is complete with Marco Melandri and Jonathan Rea, with 49 and 48 points, respectively.

Update: wonder whether all this will have an effect on the relations between MV Agusta and Yakhnich...
