The World Car Awards and the New York International Auto Show have announced the top three finalists the 2014 World Car of the Year. Ten vehicles were selected for each of the five categories earlier this year, but only three vehicles have made it in the finals.
In the overall World Car of the Year tier, the final battle will take place between the Audi A3, the BMW 4 Series and the Mazda3. The BMW i3, the Cadillac CTS or the Peugeot 308, which was named 2014 European Car of the Year this week, are among the cars that didn’t make it.

Moving over to the Luxury category, the brand new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will fight against the Bentley Flying Spur and the Range Rover Sport. Somewhat surprising, the Rolls-Royce Wraith was left out of the top three. For the World Performance Car title, the jury will have to choose between the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (named 2014 North American Car of the Year), Ferrari 458 Speciale and the Porsche 911 GTR.

Selecting three finalists for the World Green Car award must have been a bit easier, as the category included just five competitors at first. The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron, BMW i3 and the Volkswagen XL1 were chosen against the Honda According Hybrid and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Finally, the World Car Design of the Year will go to either the BMW i3, the Mazda3 or the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The overall winners in all categories will be declared at the 2014 New York International Auto Show on April 17. The vehicles will be voted on by an international jury panel comprised of 69 automotive journalists from 22 countries.
