2014 Women's World Car of the Year Winners Prove They Like the Same Things We Do

The female race? It's not a race, it's a gender and we're all the same species, two halves of the same apple. We men think the fair sex grows up playing with dolls and dreaming of princes and princesses, but that's simply not true.

Female journalists from 15 countries have selected this year's winners of the Women's World Car of the Year. The cars were judged according to 10 different criteria: style, appeal, design, function, drive quality, storage, comfort, "wow" factor, sex appeal and value for money.

Yet the results surprise us because they reveal women like the same cars we men do. The "supreme" winner was not the Volkswagen Beetle or the Fiat 500, but a very sober, luxurious German-built car, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

In fact, none of the cars selected were particularly girly. Audi got the best family car title with the A3 sedan and the best sportscar title with the S3, while the A8 came a close second to the S-Class. The Tesla Model S was the greenest of the green, while the Range Rover Sport, every football player's dream SUV, is also popular with the ladies.

All the female journalists were also asked to select a car they aspire to own. Their dream car was the Jaguar F-Type Coupe. Now, unless I'm mistaken, this was also voted FHM car of the year. So is it girly or manly? None of the above, it's just cool.

"This year, with more cars and more judges, the trend towards higher scores in the luxury and green car categories was evident very early in the voting. It was no surprise that the top three cars were in these categories in the final standings,"
said Paul McCormick, the Partner in charge of the process.

Gender neutrality seems to be the new feminism. In 2013, the Ford Fiesta won the same title, not the cute Peugeot 208 or Renault Clio. The year before that, it was the Range Rover Evoque. Maybe French companies should stop deliberately making cars for women because clearly, they don't like them.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
