Four years have passed since Volkswagen introduced the Scirocco coupe to the British market. Despite being based on the old Golf, the 'Rocco has proven quite popular because it combines looks and everyday practicality. But some of the features were beginning to look dated, which is why Volkswagen UK has just launched a refreshed version.
The 2014 Scirocco facelift was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, back in March, and it's now available for order in Britain from £20,455. For that, you get a 1.4-liter turbo engine with 125 PS and a 6-speed manual, which combined deliver respectable economy figures of 52.3 mpg combined and 125 grams per kilometer.
It's really not a bad deal, considering the cheapest Peugeot RCZ Coupe starts at £22,095 and only gets 44.1 mpg from its admittedly more powerful 1.6-liter turbo engine with 156 PS. But, if its power you're after, the new Scirocco has that in bulk.
It engine range for the Scirocco is almost entirely made up of 2-liter engines. Base modes can be ordered with a 1.4-liter turbo, but only with a manual gearbox and a single, low power rating of 125 PS. Besides that, you can have a new 180 PS 2.0-liter turbo (replaces 160 hp 1.4 twin-charger), a 220 PS turbo or one of the two diesel making 150 PS or 184 PS. All these are new engines taken from the Golf 7. They have improved economy and can be ordered with the 6-speed DSG gearbox as well.
The most economical is the 150 PS diesel, which gets 67.2 mpg combined. However, for £1,000 extra you can have the more powerful diesel with 34 extra horsepower that gets almost the same consumption figures: 64.2 mpg.
Those with hot hatch performance on their minds should go for one of the more power 2.0 TSI engines. A 220 PS version of the new Scirocco not only has 10 PS more than before, but also matches the new Golf GTI in torque output. It's available from £25,845 with a manual, which makes it cheaper than a GTI that start at £26,330 (3-door).
If you're a fan of the Scirocco, you probably covet the mighty R model. For the facelift, this gets a new engine as well, its old 265 PS mill being replaced by the 280 PS one from the Leon Cupra. The 2014 Scirocco R also looks pretty sweet thanks to redesigned front bumpers, an updated interior and an optional set of 19inch Cadiz wheels identical to the 2014 Golf R.
Prices for this model start at £32,295 with a manual or £33,795 with the 6-speed twin-clutch auto. Although we're big fans of the FWD setup, the Scirocco R facelift doesn't look like a winner. The more powerful Golf R is much cheaper, retailing from £29,900 in Britain while the 3-door SEAT Leon Cupra with the same 280 PS engine starts at £28,530.
