With the current fifth-generation Dodge Viper being still young and sometimes difficult to understand for those who haven’t driven it, the tuning market still hasn’t taken things too far. Nevertheless, the past weekend has brought us a nice development, with a twin-turbo incarnation of the supercar setting a world record for Gen V Viper quarter mile passes.
The vehicle in question, a 2014 Viper TA (Time Attack), attended an event called Texas Speed Syndicate, which was held at the Royal Purple Raceways in Houston.
The snake managed to pull a 9.62s pass at 150 mph (that’s 241.5 km/h for all you drag racing fans across the pond), giving those present a reason to celebrate on Sunday.
Before you say anything, we have to explain the time can be improved and we expect to see more on this topic next year. For one thing, the 1.7-second 60ft time would be a good starting point for a time upgrade.
The TA trim means this Viper generates more downforce than the other versions of the car, but it seems people in the Viper community have a fetish for using the TA when it comes to milestones like this. For instance, it was also a TA that took part in the race against a Corvette Z06 that went viral one year (minus a day) before this twin-turbo pass.
Speaking of forced induction, this Viper saw its 8.4-liter V10 heart being fitted with a twin-turbo kit supplied by Calvo Motorsports, while also receiving a custom fuel system, a Motec engine management system and a racing clutch.
In fact, this is Calvo Motorsports’ development car, but the aftermarket developer explains they haven’t managed to make it deliver more than 1,000 hp at the rear wheels. Here’s to hoping Santa delivers the kind of know-how required to make that happen.
P.S.: The General Lee references are strong with this Viper.
