We’ve recently had a go in the 2014 Toyota RAV4 and while the family-hauling questions and the city driving-related bits were obviously there, we had another curiosity. We wanted to know what exactly happens when you put the Active in its designation (Recreational Active Vehicle) to work.
We took the crossover off the pavement, gradually escalating the roughness of the terrain. From the scenery you see in the adjacent image, we kept going further and further until we reached a river. And we crossed it.
The RAV4 wasn’t bothered by this treatment at all, with the car having a solid feel to it. Of course, the crossover’s feelings are one thing and ours are a different story.
The car does protect you, but the suspension’s new-found appetite for road holding means you’ll be thrown around quite a bit. Of course, since the RAV4 spends about 99 percent of its time on the road, this was clearly the way to go.
There’s a fine balance when creating such a vehicle and we’ll talk more about this in our review. which is coming later this week. Stay tuned to our test drive section.
