2014 Toyota Corolla Earns Marginal Rating in Small Overlap Crash Test

The redesigned 2014 Toyota Corolla has been awarded with a "marginal" rating in the small overlap front crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for highway Safety (IIHS).

"Structural performance was poor and the driver's space was seriously compromised by intruding structure," said the Institute, adding that "measures from the dummy indicate that injuries to the left lower leg would be possible in a rear-world crash of this severity."

Despite getting a "marginal" rating in the small overlap crash test, the 2014 Corolla qualified for a Top Safety Pick award after scoring "good" ratings in IIHS' four other tests - moderate overlap front, side, rollover and rear.

Earlier this year, the IIHS tested 12 other small cars that compete against the 2014 Corolla in the US. Six of them earned "good" or "acceptable" rating in the small overlap crash and qualified for the Top Safety Pick+ designation.
