2014 Suzuki DL650A V-Strom Recalled for Chain-Related Crash Risk

Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. is recalling a small number of their new 650cc V-Strom bikes to fix a problem with the drive chain, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports. Suzuki started notifying the customers in late May this year, and reports speak of 103 bikes potentially affected by the problem.

Certain model year 2014 Suzuki DL650A V-Strom may have been supplied to final customers with an improperly riveted drive chain link. Under certain conditions, the link could become loose and cause the chain to come off the sprockets, and the causing the engine to cease transmitting power to the rear wheel. Needless to say that such a scenario increases the risk of a crash dramatically.

The affected motorcycles have been manufactured January 20, 2014, through January 21, 2014, and after the problem was discovered, dealers have been instructed to stop selling these bikes until their drive chain was replaced. Customers are advised to contact their Suzuki dealer and schedule a meeting. The dealers will replace both the front and rear sprockets of the bikes, as well as the drive joint set free of charge.

We looked at the official documents attached to this NHTSA recall (number 14V278000) and saw the GSX650F/A mentioned there with the same problem, but the campaign says nothing about these other bikes. However, you should do well and contact your Suzuki dealer and ask details for the internal recall campaign with the number 2A39. Suzuki mentions that the fault lies with the drive chain supplier. No crashes o injuries have been mentioned in the papers we had access to.
