We know that there a still la few weeks until the 2013 edition of the Pikes Peak takes place, but Land Rover decided to get there a little early and pull a rather intelligent move. The carmaker’s 2014 Range Rover Sport yesterday became the fastest production SUV to ever complete the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Course.
In fact, a 2014 Range Rover Sport became the fastest production-standard vehicle in the Race To the Clouds. The 510 hp Supercharged version completed the 12.42-mile asphalt course in 12 minutes and 35.61 seconds, with an average speed of 59.17 mph (95.23 km/h)
The vehicle was driven by American competition and stunt driver Paul Dallenbach, a Pikes Peak veteran, with the only changes to the car being a rollcage and harness seatbelts. The record was independently timed and sanctioned by PPIHC (Pikes Peak International Hill Climb).
There is a trick to the story though. The Pikes Peak course was turned into a fully-asphalt one in 2012, meaning that any car which competes now will easily brake the record of similarly-specced ones that used to race on the dirt.
