Ram Truck has announced that the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and TorqueFlight eight-speed automatic transmission combo will become available as on option in top trim level 1500 pickup trucks.
Specifically, the powertrain can now be selected on all Laramie versions of the 2014 Ram 1500, which are equipped with a standard 5.7-liter V8 Hemi.
The manufacturer has yet to the V6 as an option on these models, but PickupTrucks.com says the V6-equipped Laramies will start from $39,745 including destination, which translates into a $1,650-discount.
The company said the decision was customer and sales driven, with gasoline V6-powered trucks having gained more popularity the past year.
"We have seen Ram 1500 V6 gasoline sales increase steadily over the past 14 months. It started with the launch of our 3.6-liter Pentastar with leading 25 mpg fuel economy and 305 horsepower. Customers actually lift the hood on dealer lots because they believe the engine is a V8 rather than a V6 [after a test drive]. The popularity of our V6/eight-speed combination has been so great, we've started offering it in higher trim levels beginning this month," said Bob Hegbloom, director of the Ram Truck brand.
The 3.6-liter V6 engine generates 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. When paired with a rear-wheel drive system, the unit returns 17 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway and 20 miles per gallon combined.
