The Macan shares its platform with the Audi Q5, but we have to understand that Porsche has gone to great lengths to modify the architecture. The Macan is marketed as a high performance crossover, so, for example it features a dedicated suspension setup. The Porsche uses a double wishbone scheme up front and a multilink rear axle. Just like the Cayenne, the Macan is offered with an optional air suspension. It also comes with with wider tracks (35 mm / 1.37 inches up front and 36 mm / 1.42 inches at the back).

Again, compared to the Audi Q5, the Macan is considerably longer, wider and lower. The crossover measures 4,699 mm (185 inches) in length, 1,923 mm (75.7 inches) in width and is 1,624 mm (63.9 inches) long. Compared to the Cayenne, these dimensions make it 146 mm (5.75 inches) shorter, 16 mm (0.62 inches) narrower and 82 mm (3.2 inches) lower.

Porsche is launching the Macan with three engines. The range starts with the Macan S, which features a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 340 HP. With the help of a seven-speed PDK transmission, this needs 5.4s to hit 62 mph, or 5.2s with the optional Sport Chrono package. As for the efficiency, this sits at between 8.7 and 9 liters per 100 km.

The Macan Turbo follows, with an all-new 3.6-liter V6 offering 400 HP. This sends the crossover past the 62 mph mark in 4.8s (4.6s with Sport Chrono). As for the fuel consumption, this ranges between 8.9 and 9.2 l/100 km. For now, these are the only two units offered in the US.

There’s also a Macan S Diesel, using a 3.0-liter V6 oil burner delivbering 258 HP and pushing the car past the 62 mph mark in 6.3s (6.1s with Sport Chrono). This will only need between 6.1 and 6.3 liters of fuel to cover 100 km.

After the launch, Porsche will also introduce two entry-level engines for the Macan. These will be four-cylinder units, marking Porsche’s return to such powerplants. We’re talking about a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol unit with 280 HP and a 2.0-liter diesel unit.

The American price and market avaialbility haven’t been announced yet. As for Europe, the Cayman will reach showrooms in April 2014. The Macan S and Macan S Diesel will start at EUR57,930, while the Macan Turbo will begin at EUR79,826 - prices include 19 percent VAT.
