We had the opportunity to test drive the new Peugeot 508 which surprisingly feels better than we had expected. We can say it’s nearly a Volkswagen Passat... but not the new one, of course.
First thing you need to know about the 2014 Peugeot 508 is the fact that its’s a facelift; not a comprehensive one, but the changes are more than welcome.

Starting with the exterior, you’ll notice the new 508 has a more chiseled front end, with slimmer LED headlights, a more robust grille this time with the lion emblem sitting right in the middle, a reshaped bumper holding the LED daytime running lights as well as a sleeker hood.

Changes are present at the rear too, where a new bumper, LED lighting technology and a slightly redesigned boot lid have replaced the old parts. The side only comes with new rims, but overall the car looks a lot more modern than the previous model.

The interior gained new touchscreen infotainment and got rid of the central console control knob and buttons, leaving space for a cubby hole. Don’t get too excited because on the automatic version you can barely stick an iPhone 5 in there.

Other than that, there’s not much to brag about the interior. The dashboard still imitates the one on the Volkswagen Passat B7 and the only two colors available for the upholstery are black (with some gray) and beige.

The engine range got revised as well and we drove the version equipped with the new 2-liter BlueHDI diesel engine mated to a new 6-speed EAT6 automatic transmission with steering-mounted paddle shifters. The engine boasts 180 ponies and a whopping 400 Nm of torque making the car feel at home both around the city and on the country lanes.

Overall, it’s a pretty good sedan, offering anything you could wish for in this segment, but there’s a bit of a problem - it’s behind schedule. More on that in our full review here.
