An incredibly small percentage of the SUV drivers actually take their cars far off the road, so when it comes to crossovers, such talk is pure phantasy. Still, the 2014 Nissan Qashqai is much better at tackling rough terrain than some of its competitors, so we’ve decided to include multiple shots out in nature during our review. The styling of the second-generation Qashqai may not be as far of a stretch as the design of the first model was, but the Japanese nailed it. Did we say Japanese? We meant British. Yes, the second-gen Qashqai is designed in London, while the engineering comes from Cranfield (UK) and Barcelona (Spain). And while they build the car in Sunderland (UK), Nissan barely mentions the input of its engineers and designers in Atsugi, Japan.
Out on the open road, the top asset of this Nissan is the serenity of its drive. Even at highway speeds, the soundproofing mirrors that of a premium vehicle. To put this another way, the Qashqai will not put any strain on its driver, or its passegners, even when the trip is longer than it should be.
The 19-inch wheels on our test car were an optional feature. Even in this guise, the Qashqai managed to offer a rather smooth ride. The only gripe we had with this was the unsettled suspension feel at times, but the problem was not an important one.
Inside the city, which is where the Qashqai will spend most of its time, this car doesn’t make you pay for the fact that it is a crossover, not a hatchback. Yes, this Nissan is as easy to drive as a Golf, with the only difference being the financial one.
