The Qashqai is without a doubt the most important model for the Nissan's European division. The Sunderland-built C-segment crossover has proven itself hugely popular during its first generation and now a replacement is taking over. One small blemish could severely hurt its reputation as a family car. However, as far as Euro NCAP is concerned, the 2014 Qashqai is a great
Maximum points were scored for the driver in the front and side impact tests and the results for child protection were also very good with a 83% score. Here's what Euro NCAP had to say about pedestrian protection: "The bumper scored maximum points for the protection provided to pedestrians' legs. The front edge of the bumper showed good results in test sites near the centre of the car but was predominantly poor in more outboard locations. The protection provided by the bonnet was predominantly good or adequate with some poor results recorded on the stiff windscreen pillars."

Looking at Euro NCAP's little rendering of the bonnet, we can see most of it is actually quite soft, the only problem areas being the windshield and small edges over the headlights.

Euro NCAP also tested the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, which is fitted as an option to the car. They found it would performa adequately between 10 and 80 km/h, the sort of speeds you'd be doing in town. A lane departure warning system is also an option on the Qashqai and met Euro NCAP's requirements.

Watch how crash dummies were protected and contained in both frontal and side impacts.
