The 2014 MotoGP season has reached the summer break, with one more outstanding victory from Repsol Honda’s 2013 World Champion marc Marquez. Marquez has thus become the youngest rider to win 9 consecutive races, and is now one victory short of equaling the 1970 performance of Giacomo Agostini, who won the first 10 rounds of the season.
Sachsenring was pretty hectic on Sunday, with rain during warm up, which prompted the riders to head for the pit lane and swap for wet tires. However, the rain stopped and the track dried quickly and this forced the same unlucky fellows to change once more back to slicks, but with almost all the grid now starting from the pit lane, for a really crazy race debut. Stefan Bradl was left all alone in the front of the grid, starting from the first row, and followed by several others in the back of the finish line area.
Needless to say, the first laps have been pretty chaotic, with many of the top riders falling behind while avoiding clashing with other bikes, Rossi, Lorenzo and Marquez himself included. However, as the 30-lap race unfolded (the shortest circuit in the calendar) things have started to play out, and Marquez got to the front, expanding the gap.
His team mate Dani Pedrosa was able to keep up the pace, and finished some 1.5 seconds adrift, while Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo was third, being around 9 seconds slower to the finish line. He was followed by team mate Valentino Rossi who had to fight his way up from quite a bad race start. A surprising finish for Ducati‘s Andrea Iannone, who managed to squeeze into the 5th position.
Top 10 was completed by Aleix Espargaro, his rookie brother Pol, Andrea Dovizioso, Alvaro Bautista and Cal Cructhlow. Halfway through the season, the world standing sees an impeccable file for Marquez. Comfortably leading with the whole 225 points he could earn, followed by Dani Pedrosa who got in front of Rossi, with a total of 148 points after the German race. The Doctor is now third with 141, followed by Andrea Dovizioso with 99 and Jorge Lorenzo all over his hear wheel, with 97. The best Open class rider remains Aleix Espargaro, 6th in the world standing with 77 points.
Action returns to the US on August 10, at the Indianapolis Brickyard, and it looks like besides getting some rest, the riders who still haven’t inked their 2015 deals will be quite busy talking to their managers. And Jorge Lorenzo is one of them, too…
