It’s a hat-trick for the season opening for young Spaniard Marc Marquez, as he Repsol Honda rider wins the third race of the 2014 championship, the Argentinian round.
After a less-than-ideal start, Marquez showed that he was definitely not willing to let Jorge Lorenzo escape, and he managed to overtake the Mallorcam some 8 laps before the end of the race. Lorenzo fell to the third position as Marquez’team mate Dani Pedrosa climbed to the second place in the race.
Valentino Rossi has also had a great race but running wide twice cost him solid efforts to battle Stefan Bradl and make it back into 4th. The top ten was complete with Pramac Ducati’s Andrea Iannone, who also achieved his best placement in a MotoGP to date, followed by Tech3 duo Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro, with Ducati works rider Andrea Dovizioso 9th and Hiroshi Aoyama for Drive M7 Aspar, less than a tenth of a second ahead of team mate Nicky Hayden.
It was a dramatic race for Aleix Espargaro, who crashed early but was able to get back on the bike and even more, fight back up the ranking, finishing the Argentinian round in the 15th position, and thus getting 1 point. Tough luck for Alvaro Bautista and Danilo Petrucci, as they have both crashed in the firrt lap and were unable to continue.
So after the first 3 rounds of the 2014 season, Marc Marquez sits comfortably at the top of the current ranking, with 7 points out of 75 possible, followed by Dani Pedrosa with 56 and Valentino Rossi with 41. Lorenzo has started closing the gap to the podium, but still is far behind with 22 point, in the 7th position. Nevertheless, Bradl, Iannone and Dovizioso, who are in front of him, have all the reasons to fear for their positions, as thy have 24, 25 and 34 points, respectively.
Next round takes place takes place at the end of this very weekend 2-4 May at Jerez in Spain, on Dani Pedrosa’s favorite circuit.
