2014 MotoGP: Ducati and Hernandez Lead FP1 at Misano, 9 Riders Crash

Heavy rain and plenty of standing water on the track of the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, as the 13th round of the 2014 MotoGP championship kicked off this morning with the first Free Practice. The choice of a harder compound for the wet tires and the puddles on the track caused a real crash fest, with no less than 9 riders crashing.

Bradley Smith, Andrea Iannone, Cal Crutchlow, Hiroshi Aoyama, brothers Pol and Aleix Espargaro, Karel Abraham, Danilo Petrucci and even Valentino Rossi have scraped their leathers on the wet asphalt in Misano. By far, one of the most spectacular crashes was the synchronized coming down of Andrea Iannone and Pol Espargaro, with the Italian losing the front end of his bike and crashing, while fractions of a second, the Tech3 Yamaha rookie did just the same behind the Pramac rider.

However, the two crashes were independent, with the bikes clashing in the gravel trap and sustaining most of the damage there. Andrea Iannone was limping as he got behind the barriers, and he took off his right booth to receive an ice pack on his leg and ankle. No other significant injuries have been reported.

With the inclement conditions, the number of laps riders put in in FP1 at Misano was really small, most of them preferring to call it quits and wait for better conditions. With almost half of the grid down, there was little show to watch.

Pramac Ducati’s Yonny Hernandez is leading the FP1 at Misano, with his best lap of 1’50.310, followed by Marquez, 1.7 seconds slower, Andrea Dovizioso, Stefan Bradl and Danilo Petrucci. Rossi is 9th, followed by Pedrosa, while Lorenzo is 12th, ahead of Cal Crutchlow.

MotoGP FP2 is scheduled in 3 hours, and we’ll hopefully see the rain stopping and the track drying out for some real action and less crashes.
