During the pre-event press conference at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, Forward Yamaha’s Colin Edwards announced that 2014 will be his last season as a MotoGP rider. Him announcing such a decision seems to have been a very big surprise to the media and other riders, as the short “awkward silence” which followed Edwards’ words was quite self-explanatory.
40-year-old Colin Edwards is the series’ senior, and he has been in MotoGP since 2003. He had 12 podiums in the premier class, and stepped up in MotoGP after becoming a World Superbike champion.

It looks like Colin’s decision to hang his MotoGP leathers was triggered by two factors. First of all, after testing the new bike and tires, it was obvious to him that he needed to revise his both his riding style and use his body in a completely different way. “In testing this year I could see that I need to change my riding style and it is against my instinct to ride differently.” And you know what they say, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Secondly, and probably with even more weight to his call, Colin mentioned his family, wife and kids, who were in attendance at the press conference, and said that he was looking to spend more time with them. As to his plans after the 2014 season, Colin added that he still has to figure out what he will do, with no decision having been made yet.

And to understand better his lengthy career, here’s what the reigning World Champion Marc Marquez added: “Colin started riding at the top when I was just two years old. I hope I can ride for as long as he has and I think he can be really proud of his career."
