BMW, one of the official partners of the MotoGP, and provides of pace cars for the championship rounds, announces the new prize the BMW M Award winner will receive at the end of the season.
This year’s prize is a brand-new BMW M4 Coupe in an exclusive trim. This M4 Coupe has received a completely new 6-cylinder in-line engine which is good for 431 bhp, and which can send the car from zero to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 4.1 seconds. The engine is upgraded with BMW’s proprietary M TwinPower Turbo technology.
The BMW M Award has a long tradition with MotoGP, as it all began more than 10 years, ago, back in 2003. The M Award is a parallel competition whose aim is to rewards the best qualifying rider of the season with a brand new car. The point system is similar to that used in the MotoGP championship, with riders earning points corresponding to their position in the Qualifying sessions.
However, the M Award may go to another rider than the championship winner, as it relies on the qualifying results as the Pole position rider is not always winning the race. Still, regardless of the points he scores in the race or even if he happens to crash or finish outside the points zone (place 15) his Qualifying points remain intact.
In 2013, Marc Marquez won the BMW M Award, with no less than 9 Pole Positions through the season. Marquez is also the current leader of the M Award competition with 100 points, after having secured 4 first positions on the starting grid out of 4 races. The top 3 is complete with Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa, each with 62 points.
The newxt MotoGP round takes place in France at Le Mans, May 16-18, and is a track where Dani Pedrosa is holding no less than 3 standing records: Fastest Lap and Best Pole, from 2008, and the Circuit Record, since 2011.
