Free Practice 1 ended at Jerez, with NGM Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro posting the fastest lap, 1m39s357. He used the extra soft tire and managed to run two exceptional laps in the end of the first European outing of the season.
The Open rider leads Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo by .357 seconds, with Marc Marquez finishing FP1 in the third position and .492 seconds adrift Espargaro. A fourth Spanish rider in the top 5 this morning, Dani Pedrosa is .503 seconds behind the elder of the Espargaro brothers, and this anticipates a very hot Jerez round. Valentino Rossi was 5th, .810 behind the leader of the session.

Recovering from a dislocated little finger and a hand surgery, Ducati’s Cal Crutchlow took things easy and was 18th in Free Practice 1, while the other Ducati works rider Andrea Dovizioso finished 7th, behind Gresini Honda’s Alvaro Bautista. Andrea Iannone took a hard fall in Turn 5, but is alright and sits in the 12th position.

Yamaha’s Tech3 satellite bikes finished FP1 at Jerez with Smith and Pol Espargaro in the 9th and 15th positions, respectively, while the other satellite Honda had Bradl the 8th fastest rider this morning. The MotoGP Free Practice 2 is scheduled for 14:05 local time (GMT+2).

Though the circuit in Jerez de la Frontera is Dani Pedrosa’s favorite track in the whole calendar, the most successful rider on the Andalusian asphalt is Valentino Rossi, who won no less than 6 premier class races here.
