2014 MINI Cooper Will Have a Brand New Gearbox

Now that the cat's out the bag and we know exactly how the new MINI Cooper S will look like and what engine it will have, it's time to take a look at the transmission system.

According to the company's own press release, the new generation MINIs will benefit from new gearboxes, specially developed for the perfect driving experience. As the gearboxes are very important in any Cooper, the new ones will have some big shoes to fill.

The 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder engine will be mounted transversely and for that, the Oxford engineers, in collaboration with the German ones, developed a new gearbox that will feature an innovative gear sensor that adapts the engine speed when gear-shifting, thus allowing extremely sporty shifts, for the manuals.

However, a new automatic gearbox will also be available, most likely, the one used on the i8, since that will be the first car to use the B38 engine family. The new system will work in conjunction with the start/stop system and the navigation system to further lower fuel consumption.

How will it work? Well, it seems like gear selection will be adapted to the current route, choosing the suitable gear before even reaching junctions or before cornering.

All of this sounds really good but then this is just a bit of the technology that will be used on the new cars. How they will work together and if the overall package will be worth it, we'll just have to wait and see but we are pretty optimistic about it.
