Up until now, we were simply bombarded with photos of the new MINI Cooper S but we couldn’t get a clear idea as to what the regular Cooper would look like. The 2014 Detroit Auto Show put us face to face with the non-S model.
Unlike the S version, the Cooper is lacking the enhanced, aggressive look of the front fascia and the details around the cabin that point to a higher spec version. All the red “S” letters are gone and the red hatch looks more down to earth.

The interior is basically the same, the color combo they picked for this event being rather daring, with a beautiful, bright red contrasting against the usual black leather of MINI rides. The massive center speedo was replaced, a big screen taking its place, helping you out with the new touch-sensitive controller for the infotainment system.

The engine under the bonnet is part of the new modular B-family and has only 3-cylinders to work with. Being turbocharged, the 1.5-liter unit makes 136 HP and 220 Nm of torque if it’s running on petrol. For the diesel alternative you get 116 HP and 270 Nm of torque out of the same displacement and configuration.

Both cars will be using a new 6-speed automatic gearbox whilst the manual 6-speed will be available as a no-cost option when deliveries will begin in March, this year.
