2014 Mercedes MLC Coupe Crossover To Rival the BMW X6

The long-lasting battle for automotive supremacy between German manufacturers BMW and Mercedes-Benz is moving forward, with the latter reportedly working on a new coupe crossover model that is bound to rival the X6, a car that is considered to have introduced the “SAC” (Sports Activity Coupe) segment, as the Bavarians named it.

According to AutoBild, Mercedes is currently working on developing the MLC, a model model based on the ML-Klasse platform. However, the MLC’s shape could also draw inspiration from the current CLS, with the three-pointed star car brand expected to focus more on the design of the car, rather than the other aspects, such as practicality and space.

This, however, does not include the crossover’s performances, as the MLC should be able to fight the X6 as an equal. Therefore, in order for it to be a serious contender, Mercedes is planning an AMG version that could develop over 544 horsepower, and using the latest technologies. However, the range of fuel-efficient engines, including diesels, will start form 265 horsepower. Also, the vehicle could benefit from the M-Class all-wheel drive without the special off-road capabilities.

Expected to hit the market as a 2014 model year model, the luxury crossover will be built at the company’s Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant and will expand vehicle production there to five models.

Though details are sketchy at this point, the new Mercedes MLC coupe crossover is expected to wear a price tag in the region of EUR62,000, the aforementioned source claims.

With 120,000 BMW X6 units sold across the world since its debut in 2009, it’s no wonder that Mercedes wants to get in on the action, but by the time the MLC reaches the market, Audi and Land Rover might also bring their own contender to the game.
