The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class has become the very first Mercedes to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award for good crash test performance, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced today.
Fitted with reinforced door sills designed to improve occupant protection, the 2014 M-Class achieved “good" ratings in the small and moderate front overlap, side, roof strength and seat/restraints evaluations, which entitles it to the Institute’s top safety accolade.
The driver's space was maintained reasonably well” during the fastidious small overlap front test, said the IIHS, adding that “injuries to the left lower leg would be possible in a crash of this severity, but the risk of significant injuries to other body regions would be low.”
Introduced last year, the small overlap front crash test replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object like a tree or a pole at 40 miles per hour.
