The Mercedes Benz E-Class has undergone a major transformation which has rendered it almost unrecognizable from the previous version.
This new family of vehicles that includes the usual saloon, estate and two-door models will be officially launched on January 13th at the 2013 North American Auto Show in Detroit. The car features advanced driving aids which are going to premiere here and also be used on the next S-Class later on.
But for now, let’s focus on the styling, which is all-new for the 2014 model year. At the front, the E-Class has some new one-piece headlights with LED DRLs as standard. The bumper is completely changed from what it used to be. Much softer lines will make us all forget about the edgy E-Class and even the C-Class, as the new compact is going to look like this as well. As far as we can tell, the grille has also had to be changed and is available both with and without the star in the middle.
The shape of the taillights has stayed the same, but they’ve changed the pattern or the LEDs to a softer design. Overall, the changes made to the car are sometimes visible as an afterthought. For example, there’s a still a strong middle line on the boot lid that missing everywhere else. But the car will evoke an emotional response and looks like a brand new E-Class from most angles.
The list of engines is going to be long and complicated, with most of the units being carried over from the pre-facelift model. The headline grabber is the E200 CDI, which can produce 134 horsepower and consume only 4.1 liters of fuel on the combined cycle, equivalent to 107 grams of CO2 per Kilometer.
