Mazda North America Operations has announced changes to the ‘6’ sedan for the 2014 model year. The impressive mid-size sedan which we tested just a few short weeks ago is available now from $20,990 (Sport model) in three trim levels and can be equipped with Mazda’s new capacitor-based energy recovery system.
Featuring a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine as standard equipment, the Mazda6 gets 184-hp at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm.
Starting with this model year, the mid-trim Touring models are also available with a sporty six-speed manual transmission, but for an extra $1,050 you can have the automatic.
But by far the coolest model is the fully-equipped Grand Touring model, which starts at $29,695 MSRP. It’s the only one available with i-ELOOP as part of the GT Technology Package ($2,080 MSRP extra). This package also features additional vehicle equipment such as a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), High Beam Control (HBC), Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW), a Sport mode button and active grille shutters.
i-ELOOP is a regenerative braking system which stores electricity it recovers from braking and uses it not to power the car, but the onboard electronic systems for a few minutes.
Editor’s note: Right now, the prices in the press release don’t match those on the official website and it’s not a question of delivery costs, so you’ll probably have to check with your dealer.
