Japanese automaker Mazda has announced that the 2014 Mazda3 hatchback equipped with the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G engine is officially rated at 30 miles per gallon city and 40 miles per gallon highway.
The numbers come straight from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and are available for the version fitted with the six-speed automatic transmission. As for the six-speed manual model, the EPA says it will return 29 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined.

For segment comparison, the Hyundai Elantra GT returns 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, while the Honda Civic is rated at 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway.

The 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G Mazda3 boasts 155 HP and 150 lb-ft of torque. EPA estimates for the rest of the Mazda3 range have yet to be revealed. The company targets 37 mpg highway for the 2.5-liter hatch and 39 mpg highway for the 2.5-liter with i-Eloop.
