The 2014 Mazda3 may be scheduled to be officially released later today, but the wonderful ways of the world wide web have brought us the specs of the vehicle via a new set of leaked images.
We’ve previously showed you some leaked images of the Japanese compact, but now there are more angles, as well as the tech data. As you can see in the adjacent pics, Mazda’s new KODO design language, which we appreciated on the Mazda6, shaped the 2014 Mazda3 quite nicely. As for the drag coefficient, this sits at 0.275.

Again, like in the case of the Mazda6, the 2014 Mazda3 is quite long for its class, as the vehicle measures inches 175.8 inches (4,465 mm) in length, with a 106-inch (2,700 mm) wheelbase. As for the rest of the dimensions, the compact is 70.7 inches (1,795 mm) wide and 57 inches (1,450 mm) tall. In terms of luggage capacity, the vehicle offers 12.36 cubic feet (350 liters) of space, which can be extended to 44 cubic feet (1,250 liters) by folding the rear seats.

At the starting point of the engine range, we find a Skyactiv-G 1.5-liter petrol delivering 100 hp at 6,000 rpm and 110 lb-ft (150 Nm) at 4,000 rpm, delivering a 0 to 62 mph sprint of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 113 mph (182 km/h).

Next, we find a Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter powerplant that’s been downtuned to produce 120 hp at 6,000 rpm and 155 lb-ft (210 Nm) at 4,000 rpm. This pushes the hatch past the 62 mph psrint in 8.2 seconds and into a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h).

The same unit is also offered in a version that produces 165 hp at 6,000 rpm and 155 lb-ft (210 Nm) at 4,000 rpm. The engine is comes with Mazda’s i-ELOOP braking energy recovery system, which uses a parallel circuit. In this version, the 2014 Mazda3 needs 8.1 seconds to deal with the 0 to 62 mph sprint and offers a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h).

While the 2014 Mazda6 offers two versions for a 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel (read our test drive here), the 2014 Mazda3 only gets the lower powered one, which produces 150 hp at 4,500 rpm and a peak torque of 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) at 1,800 rpm. The poweprlant offers the same performance as the 165 hp petrol above.

As for the transmission choice, the Skyactiv-G 1.5 and Skyactiv-G 2.0 with i-ELOOP only come with a six-speed manual. However, the Skyactiv-G 2.0 and Skyactiv-D 2.2 can also be ordered with a six-speed automatic.

The 2014 Mazda3 features a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link setup at the back. The vehicle tips the scales at between 2,622 lbs (1,190 kg), for the entry-level 1.5-liter petrol engine and 2,932 lbs (1,330 kg), when fitted with the 2.2-liter diesel unit.

Just like the 2014 Mazda6, this seems to be heading for the podium of its class. The only thing we can complain about is the fact that the Skyactiv-G engines don’t feature turbocharging, as downsizing would’ve increased the efficiency a bit. And while the 2.2-liter diesel may make sense for the Mazda6, it seems a bit too much for the Mazda3, especially on markets that are affected by strong taxes for engines larger than 2,000 cc.

We’re inviting you to check out the gallery below, which offers the full specs of the 2014 Mazda3.
