We’ve seen most car models becoming larger, heavier in order to offer customers the safety and room they wanted. But in the past year or so, the trend has finally been reversed. Automakers are making lighter chassis with advanced materials and are downsizing engines.
One of the most relevant examples of this strategy is this next-generation Mazda MX-5. Right now, the car needs to have a 2.0-liter engine to offer the same kick as a 1.6-liter and then a 1.8-liter came with in the first two versions.

But the 2014 Miata will come with a small displacement Skyactiv engine that is rumored to be a 1.3-liter four-cylinder. The whole car will once again weigh less a ton, thanks to the use of high-streght steel and aluminum. The handling will also be addressed, with a clear focus being placed on driver feel.
