The Kia Optima Hybrid might have a very Korean sounding name, but is 100% American. It was launched in 2011 at the LA Auto Show and is built in West Point, Georgia. Now there's a new one, as a refreshed 2014 model year has joined the Soul EV in Chicago, proving Kia's commitment to green technology.
Under-hood, the Optima still combines a 2.4-liter engine with a six-speed automatic transmission, and but the 30kW electric motor and lightweight lithium polymer batteries are now replaced by a robust 47 kW unit. Despite the tweaks, you only get 40 mpg highway, which is well below the 2014.5 Toyota Camry that gets 43 mpg highway or the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid which gets a massive 10 mpg more. In the city, the Optima does 36 mpg as an LX model or 35 with the bigger wheels on the EX.
Where the Optima Hybrid really shines is in the looks department. There's a reworked front fascia on the car, changing the headlights and lower bumper. New 16- and 17-inch wheels, a revised rear bumper and taillights complete the transformation.
