The extensive facelift and refresh undergone by the Jeep Grand Cherokee, for the 2014 model-year, is not purely cosmetic. It updates several mechanical aspects of the SUV, as well, while also including a diesel engine into the US lineup for the first time.((Highly-successful in Europe, the diesel-powered Grand Cherokee is actually quite a common sight - it`s either the diesel or the SRT8, but usually the diesel.
The engine itself is a Fiat-sourced unit, while the Italian manufacturer commissions it from VM Motori, so it`s not their engine per se, but it`s still modern and as far as we`ve heard, it`s reliable too.
Called the EcoDiesel, the 3.0-liter V6 unit has 240 hp and 420 lb-ft (570 Nm) of torque, which is enough to push the big SUV from standstill to cruising speed with ease, courtesy of the very high torque value. However, aside from the very good torque, the only other reason you buy a diesel is economy, and here the Grand Cherokee doesn`t disappoint either, helped by its all-new eight-speed automatic gearbox, made by ZF.
It manages a moderately-respectable 21 US mpg in town, 30 US mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 25 US mpg. If you opt for all-wheel drive, then the figure goes down 1 to 2 mpg easily. Still, the Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel is still capable of trips as long as 700 miles or 1,120 km.
