Jeep’s controversial 2014 Cherokee will start rolling off its production line a month later than initially planned, Chrysler’s vice president of engineering, Mark Chernoby, announced last week.
While blaming the delay on “a wide range of issues”, Chernoby assured dealers they will have sufficient 2014 Jeep Cherokee inventory by fall. “We did start with an initial scheduled plan of the third week in May, and now we are into mid-June. That is just due to a wide range of issues,” he said.
As we already told you, the 2014 Cherokee will be available in both front and all-wheel drive and with two engine options in the United States. Also, the new Cherokee will become the first compact crossover SUV to gain a standard nine-speed automatic transmission. Sales will start in the second quarter.
As for the European version, the SUV will cross the Pond in third quarter 2013 and will sport a Fiat-sourced 2.0-liter engine. In China, the Cherokee (Ziyou Guan) will have even a smaller engine, sharing Fiat Viaggio’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder mill. Chinese production will commence by late 2014.
