Introduced at the New York International Auto Show last year, the redesigned Jeep Cherokee has finally made its public debut in Europe, where it will go on sale this year with a diesel engine under the hood.
The mill that was designated to power the Euro-spec 2014 Cherokee, besides the 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 (272 hp / 315 Nm), is a Fiat-sourced 2.0-liter MultiJet II turbodiesel. Two versions of the unit will be offered to Cherokee customers - one that generates 140 hp and 350 Nm and a more powerful version that delivers 170 hp but has the same amount of torque. Both will be equipped with Stop/Start technology.
Two transmissions will be in charge of sending power to the wheels. The 140 hp model will come with a six-speed manual, while the 170 hp version will get Chrysler's brand new nine-speed automatic. Buyers will be able to choose between three trims levels - Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk - and either front-wheel or all-wheel drive with a rear-axle disconnect feature.
Although Europe won't be getting the 2.4-liter Tigershark offered in the United States, the four-cylinder engine will become available in Russia and the Middle East. The MultiAir unit produces 184 hp and 232 Nm of torque.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee will arrive in European dealerships in the second quarter of the year. Pricing will be announced over the next couple of months.
