Big news VTEC fans: we have the first batch of photos with the new Jazz or Fit as it's known in US and Japan. Big changes have been made to this third generation car. Sales have been falling from the almost 80,000 cars sold in the US back in 2008 to just 50,000 last year, so Honda has practically reinvented the car.
The Fit/Jazz is assembled in currently assembled in 10 factories across 8 countries. It underpins a number of other cars and its platform will also be used by a small crossover. Its importance can not be overstated.
The styling is completely new. The first two generations are basically identical in this respective, but this looks more like a spaceship than a supermini. The front end has a a hint of Honda NSX and Civic hatch (for Europe), while the side profile has really strong swipes going through the door handles and above the sills. These press photos show optionally available colors that are as bold as anything Ford offers for the Fiesta. At the back, the car is a bit like the JDM Accord, with sharp, complicated design and a piece of chrome trim going from taillight to taillight.
The design is more MPV than supermini, but this is something we've always liked about the car because you get storage like in the class above.
The engine range will depend on where you live, but currently Honda has finished a 1.3-liter petrol unit with 100 PS running the Atkinson cycle, a 1.5-liter petrol and a brand new 1.5-liter hybrid that can do about 40 km/h in EV mode.
There should also be a diesel sold in Europe, either a 1.6-liter or a new 1.2-liter we keep hearing about.
