General Motors will fit the redesigned GMC Sierra with its new safety feature, the vibrating alerter seat.
GM’s safety technical fellow Raymond Kiefer explained that “using the tactile sense to communicate crash threat direction provides an effective and intuitive way to cut through the clutter of visual and auditory sensory information that drivers routinely experience,”

The system works by vibrating one of the bottom seat sides to signal a vehicle lane departure without signaling. For example, if the car drifts to the right, the safety system will detect that and it will make the bottom right side of the seat to vibrate, noticing the driver to take action. Also, the seat will vibrate both sides simultaneously if the vehicle approaches too fast on another car up ahead.

Still, the dashboard will flash some visual aids to enforce what the seat is telling the driver. Sounds like a bit of overkill. If one can’t keep a car between two white lines, what is he doing behind the steering wheel anyway?
