The engine downsizing trend in Europe does come with a really cool benefit: turbo engines that can be tuned, even the little ones. Out of all the 3-banger turbos currently on the market Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost has the best reputation, winning the Engine of the Year award twice already. We thought it was only fitting to search for tuning project that release its full potential.
More than half the Fiestas sold in Europe are ordered with EcoBoost. The 1-liter comes in two states of tune: 100 hp and 125 hp. "Well, I'll just buy the 125 hp version and enjoy the power" except it's very expensive and only available on the very best Fiesta trim level.

If you want more power from a Ford Fiesta EcoBoost, here's what you can do. A French company called BR-Performance has just chip-tuned the engine to produce 148 horsepower. Perhaps even more amazingly, the 170 Nm of torque have been increased all the way to 288 Nm.

That's about a 50% increase in power and a 69% increase in torque, which could easily shave 2 seconds off this supermini's acceleration time… just as long as the pistons don't come flying through the hood.

50 hp per cylinder in a little Fiesta… what an amazing world we're living in.
