Fiat has made one step further in its US re-conquering plan, with its 2014 500L now earning the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway safety) Top Safety Pick.
To receive the accolade, the Fiat 500L was subjected to the IIHS’ front moderate impact, roof strength test, as well as to the rear collision crash. The B-segment hatch received the highest-possible “good” rating for all of these tests.

To put it in the Institute’s words, the 500L showed a “low risk of any significant injuries” for the impact tests. This Fiat has become the 14th Chrysler Group vehicle to earn such a rating in the last 10 months. The car prides itself with a total of seven airbags, including full-length side-curtain airbags, as well as as driver’s knee bag.

However, IIHS also holds a front small overlap impact test. This simulates a crash where the corner of a car hits another vehicle or a tree. Passing this with flying colors leads to a car earning the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus rating, but no results have been published for the Fiat 500L.

Nevertheless, the 500L wasn’t alone in facing the IIHS’ crash tests, as it went through the ordeal together with the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. You can read about the SUV’s crash performance here.
