The newest model in the facelifted W212 Mercedes-Benz E-Class range for the United States has just achieved an impressive EPA rating of 45 miles per gallon in highway driving and 28 miles per gallon in city driving.
These numbers drop to 42 mpg in highway driving and 27 in the city when talking about the 4Matic version, but they are equally impressive for that type of drivetrain.
Currently, there is not other mid-size luxury sedan or even a similarly-sized one that can top the E 250 BlueTec's EPA fuel economy highway estimate.
The four-cylinder 2.1-liter diesel under the hood uses two-stage turbocharging for almost zero lag in throttle response and two Lancester balancer shafts, making it the smoothes-running four-pot diesel in the world. Offering 195 Imperial horsepower and 500 Nm (369 lb ft) of torque, the E-Class fitted with this tiny diesel is no slouch either.
To make sure that the Mercedes-Benz E 250 BlueTec meets exhaust emission regulations in all 50 US states, the BlueTec moniker actually means that it uses AdBlue injection into the exhaust to make the diesel as clean as a modern gasoline engine.
