After two hellish stages, the 2014 Dakar is halfway through, with Stage 6 providing less extreme conditions for all the racers. The bike withdrawal count is around 100, and we're sorry to add Chaleco Lopez to the list.
He crashed in a river bed and is physically safe and sound, but the bike is not going anywhere. Bad day for KTM, but still Marc Coma was second in this stage and retains the lead.

Sherco's Alain Duclos showed great consistency so far and he also took Stage 6, 1 minute ahead of Coma. Yamaha's Metge was third, followed by Barreda Bort and his Honda, and Despres in 5th. Given the "relaxed" nature of the stage, the gaps were not big, bikes and cars alike. In fact Coma laughed at the Stage 6 being a "normal Dakar day, unlike the previous two extreme ones".

It's a rest day for the brave Dakar racers and the provisional ranking sees Coma in the lead, 42 minutes ahead of Barreda. Alain Duclos sits in third, with Viladoms ad Israel Esquerre for the top 5.

Despres is 11th, with a 2h24m gap and one hour penalty and it will be hard for him to come back to the podium positions, but it's Dakar after all, and this is exactly where the unexpected is usually expected.

Tomorrow is Stage 7, Salta – Salta/Uyuni, with a 373 km (232 miles) road section and 409 km (254 miles) of special stage.
