General Motors has announced plans to recall certain new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks built for the 2014 model year to fix software issues that could lead to overheating of exhaust components and engine compartment fires.
The recall will affect about 370,000 trucks with 4.3-liter V6 and 5.3-liter V8 engines. 303,000 of them were sold in the United States, while 67,000 were exported and sold in Canada and Mexico.
GM says that the issue "is signaled by a continuous yellow 'check engine light' and an 'engine power reduced' message in the driver information center". The recall will begin on January 16, but customers can contact dealers for appointments starting Monday, the manufacturer added.
"The repair will take about 20 minutes, although dealership wait times can vary. Until then, customers are urged to avoid leaving their trucks to idle unattended," GM said in a statement, adding that trucks with 6.2-liter V8 engines are not affected by the recall.
