The old CTS has been with us since 2007, so when it was time for change, Cadillac decided to move the game forward and show that Americans can make BMWs too. If you hope to take anything away from this article, you'd better grab a pen and paper, because not even Cadillac will be able to remember everything we tell you!

The 2014 model is all-new from the ground up, built on a much larger platform that's also lighter. Cadillac used aluminum for the doors and the suspension systems to keep the weight down. Cadillac says their car is about 200 pounds (90 kg) less than the BMW 528i sedan.

As far as proportions are concerned, the new CTS is bigger by a full five inches than the old one, reaching 195.5 inches (4,966mm).

Design wise, the 2014 CTS is very much a mucho car, fitted with a large grille that is flaked by headlights that taper towards the back. The vertical lines of the LED accents make it look statues, like something from the Art Deco. We also like how Cadillac has put the headlight washers on the side of the grille instead of lower down. We've never seen that before.

Compared to the front, the back and side profile is very boring, though maybe that's a good thing.

Additional exterior features include:
  • Wider, more prominent shield grille with Galvano low-gloss polished aluminum trim, intricate grille texture and recessed wreath and crest badge
  • Unique grille texture and finish on Vsport
  • Available illuminating door handles with Galvano polished aluminum finish
  • Seamless Galvano aluminum trim around the side windows that reinforces CTS’s craftsmanship with the “line weighting” of an artist’s pencil – it’s thicker in some areas and thinner in others to emphasize different proportions
  • Chevron-shaped center high-mounted stop lamp is inset in the leading edge of the trunk lid for a more elegant, integrated appearance
  • Through-fascia trapezoidal exhaust ports are accented with chrome trim
  • Seventeen-inch wheels are standard, with 18- and 19-inch wheels available.

Three engine options are available. The base CTS has a 2.0-liter turbo with 272 hp that gets up to 30 mpg highway. It's available with al-wheel drive and comes standard with a 6-speed automatic. Next is the 3.6-liter V6, which comes with a standard 6-speed but can be fitted with an 8-speed as well. The engine makes 321 hp, gets up to 28 mpg highway and gets you to 60 in 5.9 seconds. Lastly, there's the all-new twin-turbo V6 with 420 hp. This comes standard with an 8-speed and gets you to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. We can only imagine that the CTS-V will go under 4 seconds.

Inside, the CTS is a sea of wine leather and wood. It's also thoroughly modern, and in our opinion far better designed than any of the other new Cadies. The car comes with a CUE infotainment system with a standard 8-inch or an optional 12.3-inch color touch screen with haptic feedback.

The new CTS sedan also offers Cadillac’s first 20-way adjustable front seats, which includes 14 power-assisted adjustments, a manual cushion length extension and four-way manual headrests. The 20-way full-leather seats are available, with 16-way adjustable seats standard with leather seats. The CTS’s standard seats feature 14-way adjustment.

Other highlights include:
  • Motorized, hand-wrapped cup holder lid in the center console
  • Heated and cooled (ventilated) front seats and heated steering wheel
  • Electronically locking glove box with LED lighting
  • Electronic park brake
  • Adaptive remote start feature that also activates the climate control system
  • Standard Bose eleven-speaker sound system and available Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound system with 13 speakers.
  • Available manual rear door shades and power-operated rear window shade.

“The range of interior environments reflects the ambience of customers’ driving experiences – from relaxed touring to serious performance,” said Clough. “They enhance the emotional connection to the CTS, while always reinforcing the craftsmanship and refinement at the foundation.”
