2014 BMW X5 Review by Autoweek

For the North American X5 fans out there, BMW set up a proper launch event for the 3rd generation model somewhere in the wilderness of Vancouver, Canada, the perfect place to test the car’s off road abilities.

Sure, you’ll say that few owners of USD70,000 luxury SUVs will take their cars outside the city, but BMW wanted to cover everyone, even that kind of people.

The guys from Autoweek were also on the scene and took one car for a ride. Their model was an xDrive50i, fitted with a revised N63 4.4-liter V8 that now makes 450 HP and 650 Nm (480 lb-ft) of torque.

However, they were a little cheap on details concerning the way the car feels on the road and how it is improved over its predecessor. Of course, they did congratulate BMW for the incredible xDrive system that got them out of a very sticky situation when off roading but details were scarce.

What they did say was that the new SUV feels quiet and comfortable and offers almost every possible tech feature you could imagine, from pedestrian protection with automatic braking to night vision. However, we can say that all those options can become tiresome when browsing through them in the iDrive menu.

Stock kit now includes a 10 inch display for the infotainment system and bixenon headlamps. Other stuff will also be included but there are so many new items on the standard list that we won’t list’em here to bore you to death.

Bottom line, the new X5 feels like a definite improvement over its predecessor, both on and off the road. The new standard kit is always welcome and so is the improved steering and comfort, so if you’re thinking of upgrading, it’s worth the test drive.
