2014 BMW M3/M4 First Ride by MotorTrend

While we're sitting at home, patiently waiting for BMW to launch the most expected cars fans want from them this year, some people are lucky enough to be invited over to their testing facilities to see what they can do.

The guys from MotorTrend were amongst the first to go to Munich and test the M3 and M4. Well, maybe 'test' is a strong word... We should've said 'ride along' as they only got to sit on the passenger seat as a DTM pilot drove them around a special course set up near their HQ.

As you read on our blog already, the new cars will be fitted with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder bi-turbo unit that makes around 430 HP and a lot over 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.

On top of that, the chassis has been drastically improved, with a lower center of gravity and revised suspension, all of them to go better with the lighter built of the cars.

As for how the car feels on the road, the guys from MotorTrend were pretty determined to let us know that you will feel the torque from the first moment. It takes you by surprise, even at low revs, something you would expect in a car that is so sought after.

On top of that, all the acceleration is kept in place with a set of extraordinary Carbon Ceramic Brakes, another first for the two models. To put it mildly, their impression was that "the carbon-ceramic brakes threaten to detach my retinas" so you might figure out what that means.

On the slalom, the car is claimed to be much more responsive, thanks to the lighter front end and the revised steering that comes from the 5 Series and has been thoroughly tested to the highest expectations. We'll just have to wait and see if their work will pay out.
