It seems like that time has come. The moment when the new X5 hits the road and test drives start pouring in. Just like it happened with the new 4 Series, expect a range of BMW F15 X5 reviews to show up on the internet, Edmunds being amongst the first ones.
They drove the xDrive50i model, fitted with almost everything you could possibly want. Some might say the engine on this car is new but it's actually an upgraded version of the one used on the E70 xDrive50i.
It has 4.4-liters in displacement, a V shape and 8 cylinders, produces 450 HP and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque and is hooked up to the majestic ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. The sound is also improved, tingling your eardrums at higher revs.
The Bavarians are bragging about making the car more to the liking of the general customers. They seem to have complained that the X5 is too harsh and noisy. So, guess what? The new car is softer and 2.5 dB quieter on the road, therefore BMW delivered.
However, there are bad things to be said too. Unfortunately, the electric steering drama continues, making this car the same numb car you complained about in recent models.
On the inside, the interior was upgraded and has a new design and better materials seem to be used. The rear seats have more room and are now 40:20:40 foldable, whilst a 3rd row of seats can also be added if you need it to.
Technological improvements were done to the iDrive too and the multimedia system now has some new features like lane-keeping, radar-controlled cruise that extends to traffic jam stop-and-go, and (from December) a lane-keeping traffic jam assistant, too.
Bottom line, the X5 didn't forget its roots. It's still a luxurious SUV that will carry you in comfort and will be extremely versatile in urban conditions, allowing you to use it in any way you want it to. The improvements outweigh the downsides by far and it will definitely be a top seller for the niche it aims at.
